SSC Typing Test

Practise the Staff Selection Commission skill tests as the CHSL notice describes them: the 10 minute typing test for LDC and JSA posts (35 words a minute in English or 30 in Hindi) and the 15 minute Data Entry Operator test (8,000 or 15,000 key depressions an hour). Results are given in key depressions per hour, with the arithmetic shown.

For millions of people in India, the railway is not just a means of transport. It is the way students travel to college, workers return home for festivals and families visit relatives in distant states. Indian Railways is one of the largest railway networks in the world, and its trains carry passengers through deserts, forests, river plains and mountain valleys every day. The first passenger train in India ran between Bombay and Thane in 1853. Since then the network has grown steadily, and in recent decades the focus has shifted to electrification, faster trains and better stations. Booking a ticket has also changed completely. Long queues at reservation counters have largely given way to online booking, and passengers can now check the running status of their train on a mobile phone. Many large stations now have lifts, escalators and free Wi-Fi, which make the journey easier for older passengers and people carrying heavy luggage. Announcements and signboards appear in several languages, so that travellers from every region can find their way. Railways matter to the economy as much as to travellers. Freight trains move coal, food grains, cement, steel and containers across the country at a lower cost than road transport over long distances. Dedicated freight corridors have been built to separate goods trains from passenger traffic, which helps both kinds of trains run on time. Running such a large system safely is a huge task. Thousands of employees work round the clock as loco pilots, guards, station masters, signal staff, track inspectors and maintenance workers. Modern signalling and safety

The SSC skill tests, from the CHSL 2026 notice

The Staff Selection Commission's Combined Higher Secondary Level (CHSL) examination recruits Lower Division Clerks (LDC), Junior Secretariat Assistants (JSA) and Data Entry Operators (DEO). After the written papers, Tier-II includes a skill test: a typing test for LDC and JSA, and a data entry skill test for DEO posts. Both are qualifying in nature, so they do not add marks, but you must pass to be selected. Everything below is taken from the CHSL 2026 notice published on 7 September 2026.

Typing test for LDC and JSA (para 13.9.13.7)

  • The medium is Hindi or English, chosen in the online application form. The choice is final.
  • English needs 35 words per minute and Hindi 30, which "correspond to about 10500 key depressions per hour and about 9000 key depressions per hour respectively".
  • "The speed will be adjudged on the accuracy of typing on the Computer of a given text passage in 10 minutes."
  • Candidates eligible for a scribe get 5 minutes of compensatory time, so 15 minutes in all.
  • Hindi medium candidates "will be required to type in Mangal Font only". Using any other font leads to non-qualification.
  • Candidates with a disability certified as unable to type by the competent medical authority may be exempted.

Skill test for Data Entry Operators (para 13.9.13.6)

PostsSpeedTimePassage
Part A: DEO in the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, the Staff Selection Commission, and the Ministry of Culture15,000 key depressions an hour15 minutesEnglish, about 3,700 to 4,000 key depressions
Part B: DEO in every other department8,000 key depressions an hour15 minutesEnglish, about 2,000 to 2,200 key depressions

Speed is "adjudged on the basis of the correct entry of words/ key depressions as per the given passage". The DEO skill test is mandatory, with no exemptions, and scribe-eligible candidates get 20 minutes.

How this page scores you

A key depression is one key press, and SSC's conversion assumes five of them per word, which is how 35 words a minute becomes 10,500 an hour (35 x 5 x 60). This page counts the characters of every word you typed correctly, plus one for the space after it, and scales that to an hour:

Correct key depressions = characters in correct words + 1 space each
KDPH = correct key depressions x 60 / minutes
WPM  = KDPH / 300

For example, 1,800 correct key depressions in 10 minutes is 10,800 KDPH, or 36 words a minute, just above the English requirement. A wrong word earns nothing, which reflects the notice's emphasis on accuracy.

The notice also says the skill test "will be evaluated as per the evaluation guidelines available on the website of the Commission" and that errors are calculated to two decimal places. The review after each test marks full and half mistakes using SSC's published guidelines for evaluating typed scripts, and shows your error percentage. Coaching sites quote error limits of 5, 7 or 10 percent, but we could not find an SSC document that sets a limit for the CHSL typing test, so this page does not pass or fail you on errors. It passes you on correct key depressions alone.

Corrections are allowed

SSC's instructions for the typewriting test say that after typing the passage once, candidates should not retype it, and "If spare time is available candidates may utilize the time for checking the typescript and making corrections." Backspace therefore works on this page. If you reach the end of the passage, stop and check your work, then press Submit.

Preparing

  • Practise in the medium you chose on the form. You cannot switch later.
  • For Hindi, practise in Unicode (Mangal), not Krutidev. The Hindi typing test has Remington and InScript with key hints.
  • Aim comfortably above the line: practise until you reach 40 words a minute in English (12,000 KDPH) with few mistakes, because nerves cost speed on the day.
  • For the DEO test, take the 15,000 KDPH option even if you are applying for Part B. It builds the stamina for 15 minutes of steady typing.

Where to verify

How to use

  1. Choose LDC/JSA English, LDC/JSA Hindi, or the DEO test at 8,000 or 15,000 key depressions an hour.
  2. For Hindi, pick your layout. All three type Unicode text, as the Mangal font requires.
  3. Click the typing box and start. The clock starts on your first key and runs for 10 minutes (15 for DEO).
  4. Correct slips with Backspace as you go, as the SSC instructions allow.
  5. If you finish the passage early, check it and press Submit. Otherwise the test ends when time runs out.
  6. Read your key depressions per hour against the target, and the marked passage.

Frequently asked questions

How many words do I need to type in the SSC CHSL typing test?

At 35 words a minute for 10 minutes, about 350 words in English, which is about 1,750 key depressions. In Hindi, 30 words a minute for 10 minutes is about 300 words. SSC states the speeds as about 10,500 and 9,000 key depressions per hour.

Is the SSC typing test qualifying?

Yes. The CHSL 2026 notice says the skill test or typing test will be of qualifying nature. It does not add to your marks, but you have to pass it.

Which font is allowed for the Hindi typing test?

Mangal only. The CHSL 2026 notice says Hindi medium candidates will be required to type in Mangal font, and that using any other font leads to non-qualification. Mangal is a Unicode font, so practise Unicode typing rather than Krutidev.

Can I use Backspace in the SSC typing test?

SSC's typewriting test instructions allow candidates to use spare time for checking the typescript and making corrections, so correcting is permitted. Corrections cost time, so accuracy on the first pass is still what makes you fast.

What is the difference between 8,000 and 15,000 KDPH?

Data Entry Operator posts in the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, the Staff Selection Commission and the Ministry of Culture need 15,000 key depressions an hour on a passage of about 3,700 to 4,000. DEO posts elsewhere need 8,000 an hour on about 2,000 to 2,200. Both tests last 15 minutes.

How much extra time do scribe-eligible candidates get?

Five minutes. The LDC/JSA typing test becomes 15 minutes and the DEO skill test 20 minutes for candidates eligible for a scribe.

What error percentage does SSC allow?

The notice says the test is evaluated as per SSC's evaluation guidelines and that errors are calculated to two decimal places. We could not find an SSC document stating a percentage limit for the CHSL typing test, so this page shows your error percentage without passing or failing you on it.
