Lorem Ipsum Generator

Lorem ipsum is scrambled Latin. The words come from De finibus bonorum et malorum, a treatise on ethics that Cicero wrote in 45 BC; the standard passage has been cut, shuffled and misspelled so thoroughly that it no longer forms sentences. That is the whole point. Text that looks like language but carries no meaning lets a reviewer judge type size, line length, spacing and hierarchy without being pulled into reading. Typesetters used it for centuries; it spread to every designer's desk through transfer lettering sheets in the 1960s and desktop publishing software in the 1980s, and from there into web templates.

This generator assembles text at random from the traditional lorem ipsum vocabulary. You choose the unit (paragraphs, sentences or words) and a count from 1 to 100. The output regenerates whenever you change either setting, and the Generate button rolls a fresh sample. Paragraphs are separated by a blank line, sentences are placed one per line, and words come as a single run. Because the words are drawn randomly, each sample is different and it will not necessarily open with the famous "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" line. Everything runs in your browser.

Why nonsense beats real copy during layout

Show stakeholders a mockup filled with real sentences and the meeting turns into a copy review. Show them meaningless text and they look at the design. Lorem ipsum also has a useful shape: a mix of short and long words, punctuation at plausible intervals, and no proper nouns or numbers that would draw the eye. That makes it a fair stand-in for body text in Latin-script languages when you are choosing a typeface, testing a column width or checking that a card component survives three lines of description instead of one.

Where it misleads you

• Length. Real headlines are shorter or longer than the placeholder, and translated strings often run much longer than the English source. A button that fits "Submit" may not fit its Hindi or German equivalent.
• Content shape. Product names, email addresses, long URLs, 16-digit card numbers and empty states never appear in lorem ipsum, and those are exactly the strings that break layouts.
• Script. Lorem ipsum uses Latin letters only. It tells you nothing about how Devanagari, Telugu, Tamil or Bengali text wraps, how much vertical space conjunct characters need, or whether your font stack even has the glyphs. Test those layouts with real sentences in the target script.
• Tone. A marketing page reads differently once real claims replace filler, and legal or medical copy may need disclaimers that change the whole page structure.

A practical rule: use placeholder text for the first round of layout decisions, then switch to representative content (the longest realistic title, the shortest, a name with 40 characters, a description with none) before you call a component finished.

Placeholder text in your own tools

You do not always need a web page for this. Many editors and libraries generate filler on the spot:

• VS Code and other Emmet editors: in an HTML file, type lorem and press Tab for a paragraph, lorem10 for ten words, or ul>li*5>lorem4 for a list of five short items.
• Microsoft Word: type =lorem(3,4) on an empty line and press Enter for three paragraphs of four sentences each.
• JavaScript: faker.lorem.paragraphs(3) from @faker-js/faker, the same library this page uses, is handy inside component stories and seed scripts.
• Python: the faker package offers Faker().paragraph() and Faker().sentence() for fixtures and screenshots.

Measuring what you generated

When a design spec says "description, up to 160 characters" or "intro, about 120 words", generate a sample here and paste it into the Text Analyzer to confirm the count before dropping it into the mockup. Sentence and paragraph lengths vary from sample to sample, so measure rather than guess, and trim or extend the text to the budget the design calls for.

1. Choose the unit: paragraphs (separated by blank lines), sentences (one per line) or words (a single run).
2. Set the count anywhere from 1 to 100. The output updates as soon as either setting changes.
3. Click Generate whenever you want a different random sample of the same size.
4. Click Copy and paste the text into Figma, a CMS field, an email template or a component story.
5. Before sign-off, replace the placeholder with realistic content, including the longest and shortest strings you expect.

• Filling text frames in Figma or Sketch before the copywriting team delivers final wording.
• Stress-testing a card, list or table component with one, three and ten lines of body text.
• Populating a CMS staging site so editors can practise the workflow with harmless content.
• Generating body copy for portfolio screenshots where the real client text is confidential.
• Seeding a blog theme with several posts of varying length to check pagination and excerpts.
• Producing quick sample input for a word-count or reading-time feature you are testing.
