About the Typing Speed Test

Words per minute (WPM) is the standard measure of typing speed, calculated as five characters per "word" so that fast typists are not penalised for short words. The average adult types around 40 WPM; a touch typist averages 60-80; competitive typists regularly exceed 120. Equally important is accuracy — fast typing with frequent backspaces is slower in practice than slightly steadier typing without errors.

This test runs for a configurable duration (15, 30, 60 or 120 seconds) and shows your live WPM and accuracy as you type. The text passages are drawn from a curated word list so they remain typeable but realistic. Your historical scores are stored locally in your browser.

How to use

  1. Pick a duration (15 / 30 / 60 / 120 seconds).
  2. Click the input area and start typing the displayed text.
  3. The timer starts on your first keystroke; WPM and accuracy update in real time.
  4. When the timer expires, the final score is recorded in your local history.

Common use cases

  • Practising touch typing in short, focused sessions.
  • Measuring improvement over weeks of practice.
  • Benchmarking yourself against the team during lunch break.
  • Warming up before a long writing session.

Frequently asked questions

How is WPM calculated?

(Characters typed correctly / 5) divided by the test duration in minutes. The "five characters per word" convention dates back to the 1920s.

Does this count backspaces?

Backspacing to fix a typo is allowed and the corrected character counts as correct. Backspacing past a correct character lowers your effective WPM.

Is my typing data sent anywhere?

No. Scores are stored in localStorage on your device and never uploaded.
