CPCT Typing Test

Practise the typing sections of the Computer Proficiency Certification Test (CPCT) used for Madhya Pradesh government jobs. Each test runs for 15 minutes and is scored with CPCT's published method: words compared in order, net words per minute over the time you take, and the scorecard band for your speed. Hindi uses Remington (GAIL) or InScript on Unicode, the two layouts CPCT offers.

Every year lakhs of young people in India prepare for competitive examinations that lead to jobs in government offices, banks and the railways. The number of applicants is usually far larger than the number of posts, so the competition is intense. Success rarely comes from talent alone. It comes from a sensible plan followed steadily over many months. The first step is to read the official notification carefully. It lists the eligibility rules, the pattern of the examination, the syllabus and the important dates. Many candidates rely on summaries from friends or coaching material and miss details that matter, such as the minimum typing speed for a post or the documents required at the time of verification. The notice issued by the recruiting body is the only reliable source. A good study plan divides the syllabus into small parts and sets a weekly target for each. Subjects that carry more marks or that you find difficult deserve more time. Previous question papers are especially valuable, because they show the level of the questions and the topics that appear often. Solving them under timed conditions also builds the speed needed on the day of the examination. Skill tests need regular practice of their own. A candidate who must pass a typing test cannot start preparing a week before the date. Typing speed improves slowly, through short daily sessions that focus on accuracy first. The same is true for computer skills and for any physical test. Health and attitude matter as much as books. Long hours of study without rest lead to

About CPCT typing, from the CPCT documents

The Computer Proficiency Certification Test (CPCT) is run by MAP_IT for jobs in the Madhya Pradesh government that need computer and typing skills. It has three parts, each marked separately on the scorecard: a multiple choice section on computer proficiency, an English typing test and a Hindi typing test. Candidates need to have passed Higher Secondary or a polytechnic diploma after Class 10, and to be 18 or older on the date of registration. Scorecards are valid for 7 years from the exam date.

The typing sections

  • English typing: a 5 minute mock, then the 15 minute test (20 minutes for candidates with a disability).
  • Hindi typing: a mock, then the 15 minute test (20 minutes for candidates with a disability). Hindi is typed in Unicode with a choice of Remington (GAIL) or InScript, the layout you opted for at registration.
  • Editing is allowed: CPCT uses what it calls the unrestricted method, so you can correct and delete as you type.
  • The Submit button only becomes active once the whole passage has been typed. Otherwise the test submits itself when time runs out.

How CPCT works out your speed

CPCT's document "Typing Test Assessment in CPCT" sets out the method. Words are found by splitting your text on the space character and comparing each word with the word in the same position in the reference text:

Gross words (GW) = correct words + incorrect words
Net words (NW) = correct words
GWPM = GW / time taken in minutes
NWPM = NW / time taken in minutes
Accuracy = NWPM x 100 / GWPM

Time taken runs from the start until you submit, so finishing early and submitting raises your NWPM. Only NWPM goes on the scorecard as your typing speed. This page uses exactly this method, including the word-by-word comparison.

One extra space can wreck the score

CPCT's Hindi typing instructions warn: "Make sure there is no extra space between two words as it would be assessed wrong for all words typed after this extra space." Because words are compared by position, an extra space, a skipped word or an added word shifts everything after it. Your score here behaves the same way. The review under the result lines your words up with the passage so you can find the slip.

From NWPM to the scorecard percentage

English NWPMScoreHindi NWPMScore
30 to 4050%20 to 2550%
41 to 5060%26 to 3060%
51 to 6070%31 to 3570%
61 to 7080%36 to 4080%
71 to 8090%41 to 5090%
81 or more100%51 or more100%

The table is from CPCT's guide to reading the scorecard. Its lowest band starts at 30 NWPM in English and 20 in Hindi, so this page treats those as the qualifying speeds. CPCT does not say how it rounds NWPM between bands, so this page rounds down, which never flatters you. The scorecard disclaimer adds that departments may ask for a higher speed than the qualifying score, so check the job notice too.

Preparing

  • Practise the full 15 minutes. Speed drops with fatigue, and CPCT's clock is long.
  • Make single spaces automatic. Under word-by-word comparison, a double space is the costliest mistake you can make.
  • For Hindi, practise the layout you will opt for. The Hindi typing test has key hints for Remington (GAIL) and InScript.
  • Submit as soon as you finish: time stops at submission, so a quick finish improves NWPM.

Where to verify

  • CPCT portal: "Typing Test Assessment in CPCT", the rule book, the exam duration table, "How to read the score card", and the Hindi typing instructions.

How to use

  1. Choose English or Hindi. For Hindi, choose Remington (GAIL) or InScript, the two layouts CPCT offers.
  2. Click the typing box and start. The 15 minute clock starts on your first key.
  3. Type the passage with single spaces. Backspace works, as in CPCT.
  4. Submit becomes active once you have typed the whole passage. Press it straight away, because time stops on submission.
  5. Read your NWPM, GWPM, accuracy and the scorecard band for your speed.

Frequently asked questions

What is NWPM in CPCT?

Net words per minute: the number of correctly typed words divided by the time you took in minutes. It is the only typing figure printed on the CPCT scorecard.

What is the qualifying speed for CPCT typing?

The scorecard table starts at 30 NWPM in English and 20 NWPM in Hindi, both scored at 50 percent. Departments may ask for more, so check the requirement in the job notice.

Can I use Backspace in CPCT?

Yes. CPCT uses the unrestricted method, in which candidates can type wrong words and modify or delete typed text.

Why did all my words turn wrong after one mistake?

CPCT compares each word with the word in the same position. An extra space, a skipped word or an extra word shifts everything after it, so every later word counts as wrong. Keep to single spaces and do not skip words.

Which Hindi layouts does CPCT allow?

Remington (GAIL) and InScript, both typing Unicode text. You choose one, and it is shown on your admit card.

How long is a CPCT scorecard valid?

Seven years from the date of the exam, according to the CPCT rule book.

How is CPCT accuracy calculated?

Accuracy is NWPM x 100 / GWPM, which is the same as correct words divided by all words typed. CPCT treats it as reference information. Only NWPM is the final result.
